Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved with the Wildlife Resources Division and Georgia's natural resources. These opportunities range from careers with WRD and other Georgia natural resource organizations to simply enjoying the outdoors and all that Georgia has to offer. In fact, this entire Web site is dedicated to providing information to help Georgia residents and visitors get involved and stay involved in natural resource activities.

2008 Youth Birding Competition

The 24-hour birding competition will be held Friday, May 2, 2008. The competition allows teams (representing schools, Scout troops, 4-H club, science clubs, etc.) to compete with other teams their age and count as many species of birds as they can in Georgia. Click here for more info.

Georgia Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan

Comments are sought on a plan that puts a bull's-eye on Georgia's aquatic invaders. The draft Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan is now available online at www.georgiawildlife.com or the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division office in Social Circle. A public comment meeting is set for 5:30–7:30 p.m. July 10 at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center in Mansfield. For directions to Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center, call 770–784–3059 or enter the following address in your preferred Internet mapping program: 543 Elliott Trail, Mansfield, Ga. 30055. The comment deadline is July 30.

Troublesome exotics include hydrilla, an Asian water plant that has infested several reservoirs, and the island apple snail, a South American mollusk threatening aquatic communities in deep south Georgia. The plan even addresses land-dwellers that pose aquatic risks, such as feral hogs, which can affect streams and wetlands by rooting up soil and vegetation.
